- Sports Centre
Instead of a single large building housing everything under one roof, the new Sports Centre will be arranged into three separate, but linked, ‘pavilions’, comprising the swimming pool, sports hall and fitness centre. This part of the development is known as ‘Kingsgate Park’. More information can be found here.
- Support Services Building
The reorganisation of the site to provide space for the new Sports Centre requires the relocation of the Works and Support Departments’ buildings. Currently housed in a 1990s warehouse-style building and converted squash courts, the Works Department, Grounds and Gardens Stores, Furniture Store and Laundry all need to make way for the new development. In addition to its current functions, the new centralised facility will include improved Waste and Recycling as well as a new heating system to provide heat and hot water to school buildings.
The primary vehicle access route to the new Sports Centre will be from Norman Road, facilitating vehicle access and parking to the south, and creating a safer environment for pedestrians in the northern area. The existing level of parking in the area will be maintained. The northern Kingsgate Road entrance will become pedestrian only, eliminating the traffic that currently travels along Kingsgate Road.
- Design and Technology
The school’s intention is to retain and refurbish the original workshop and extend it to the west to provide modern facilities for boys.
The sanatorium is to eventually be moved to a more central location to the rear of 44 – 48 Kingsgate Road, close to the primary pedestrian routes into the site whilst maintaining a sense of quiet seclusion overlooking Kingsgate Park. A two-storey building of domestic scale will be constructed to meet the school’s needs.
The residential character of Kingsgate Road will be maintained with a new dwelling being built at the former vehicle entrance to the existing PE Centre.
